For part of September and October, we handed over YCCBC's Instagram to our Squamish team, giving them the platform to share their projects and work in the community. Over this month our Squamish crew, Aida Goma Petit, Nicole Kilistoff, Keenan Miles, and William Côté, gave us a look behind the scenes into the importance and reality of climate action work.
One of the major projects they shared with us was their collaboration with the District of Squamish to improve energy efficiency in the community. The team undertook air sealing for 24 homes, focusing on older residences with high energy demands. Air sealing helps reduce community-wide emissions, and offers a practical solution for energy conservation. Through this work, the crew not only made an environmental impact but also developed valuable technical skills and promoted air sealing in the community.
In addition to their work in air sealing, Keenan and the rest of the team hosted an intergenerational conversation event aimed at bridging generational and social gaps in Squamish. The intergenerational conversation created a safe space for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to come together and discuss environmental and social issues affecting the community.
Keenan described the motivation behind this project saying, "I truly believe that the best way to create change is by creating strong connections with the community you are a part of. Real change can only happen when we work together all different kinds of people in our communities."
Another highlight of their takeover was supporting the District of Squamish’s “Go by Bike Week,” an initiative encouraging residents to reduce car use by opting for biking as a sustainable alternative. The team also offered free bike tune-ups to community members, making sustainable transportation more accessible.
Additionally, the team participated in the Community Climate Action Plan Open House, an event organized to discuss updates to the Community Climate Action Plan (CCAP). At the open house, the crew shared their perspectives and feedback on the District’s climate goals.
These are just some examples of the many projects the YCCBC crew is accomplishing. Thank you so much the Squamish crew for their amazing work on this project and for all the important work they are doing in their community.
