This past month, YCCBC’s Instagram was taken over by our incredible Vancouver team, offering a behind-the-scenes look at their work. Over four weeks, Simryn Dhensaw, Kayley Johns, Jillian McLeod, and Allena Arnold each took the reins, sharing personal insights from the final weeks of the 2024 Vancouver cohort.
Their primary focus in recent months has been the Climate Friendly Homes Program, which provides free preliminary home assessments and educational sessions on climate-conscious living. The team hosted several information sessions, helping homeowners and renters navigate available rebates, understand the benefits of heat pumps, create healthy landscapes, and build stronger community networks for climate resilience.
During their takeover, the team partnered with the Wild Bird Trust of BC at Maplewood Flats, a conservation area in North Vancouver. Located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Maplewood Flats has been protected since 1993.
The Wild Bird Trust, a non-profit charitable organization, has managed the site for over 30 years, safeguarding it from development and preserving its habitats for birds and other wildlife.

The takeover also gave YCCBC Vancouver members a chance to explore their individual interests in climate action. Jillian focused on rain gardens, highlighting their role in creating healthier landscapes across the Lower Mainland.
Similarly, Kayley highlighted the vital connection between community resilience and climate resilience. She explored how strong social networks, local collaboration, and shared knowledge can help communities better adapt to climate challenges.
Allena concluded her takeover by emphasizing the importance of responsible food waste disposal. She explored how proper composting, reducing food waste, and supporting local food systems can minimize environmental impact.
This is just some of the incredible work our Vancouver team shared during their social media takeover. To see more, check out our Instagram!
A huge thank you to Simryn, Kayley, Jillian, and Allena for their dedication to this initiative and their contributions to YCCBC over the past several months.
